Men's Golf Comes from Six Strokes Back to Tie for First at SAA Fall Preview

The Oglethorpe men's golf team got the new season off to an outstanding start Sunday at the SAA Fall Preview in Dickson, Tennessee, as they came back from six strokes behind to tie Berry for first place at the 36-hole event at Greystone Golf Club. They shot a 1-under-par 575, finishing with a 1-under 287 in the first round and an even-par 288 in the second.

Senior Jacob Arnett won the individual medal at the event with an 8-under 136 over two rounds, putting him four strokes ahead of a 3-way tie for second. He shot a 7-under 65 in the first round, tying a school record for the most strokes under par in a round on a par-72 course.

The Stormy Petrels found themselves down six strokes to Berry after the first round, but they came back over the course of the second despite multiple weather delays and encroaching darkness.

Senior Kyle Shealy was one of the three players tied for second behind Arnett, firing a 4-under 140. Sophomore Sean Fromme finished tied for 22nd with a 4-over 148 after a pair of 74s. Sophomore Tyler Rover came in tied for 37th with a 7-over 151, while freshman Tripp Murphy began his collegiate career with an 8-over 152.

The Petrels also had a secondary team of individuals competing at the event, and that group was led by freshman Justin Vincent, who finished tied for fifth with a 3-under 141. Fellow freshman Isley McClure finished tied for 17th with a 3-over 147, while freshman Justin Rickerson finished tied for 34th with a 6-over 150. If the secondary team's score had counted as a team, they'd have finished 10th in the event.

A Huntingdon team of individuals finished at 6-under 570 for the tournament, five strokes ahead of Oglethorpe and Berry, but with their scores not counting toward the team competition, the Vikings and Petrels shared the title.

"This was a great way to start the season," said Oglethorpe head coach Jim Owen. "To come back from six strokes down like we did in the wet conditions we did it in says a lot about the potential this team has. Now we'll look to take some momentum from this going into next weekend's NCAA Fall Preview."

The Petrels will travel to Nicholasville, Kentucky, for the NCAA Division III Men's Fall Preview beginning Monday, Sept. 17. The 2-day event will take place at the Keene Trace Golf Club, site of the NCAA Division III Men's Golf Championships in May 2019.
