Men's Golf Finishes 10th at Tartan Invitational

The Oglethorpe men's golf team finished their week at the Tartan Invitational in Ligonier Township, Pennsylvania, Tuesday with an 18-over-par 306 at the historic Laurel Valley Golf Club, giving them a 52-over 916 for the week and putting them in 10th place out of 12 teams, 43 strokes back of champions Wittenberg. 

The Stormy Petrels were led on the week by senior Jacob Arnett. The 2-time reigning All-American posted a 1-over 73 on the day to vault nine spots up the leaderboard into an 18th-place tie at 9-over 225. That put him 12 strokes behind Emory's Matt Organisak for the individual medal. 

Sophomore Anthony DeRosa also recorded a 1-over 73 on the day, moving himself nine spots up the leaderboard, as well, and finishing the tournament at 16-over 232. He finished tied for 40th with freshman Tripp Murphy, who shot a 6-over 78 on the day and also finished at 232 for the tournament. Sophomore Tyler Rover finished just behind that in a tie for 43rd at 17-over 233. He posted a 10-over 82 on the day. Freshman Justin Vincent posted a 13-over 85 on the day and finished at 22-over 238 for the event, tied for 51st.

Wittenberg and Emory tied for the lead after 54 holes, with Wittenberg winning a playoff for the the championship. Greensboro finished third, 21 strokes back, while Methodist came in fourth at 25 back and hosts Carnegie Mellon finished fifth at 27 back. Allegheny, Kenyon, New York University and Ohio Wesleyan joined the Petrels in rounding out the top 10.

The Petrels will be back in action from Miramar Beach, Florida, on Sunday. They'll travel to the Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort for the Golfweek Division III Fall Invitational at the Raven Golf Club. That event will run Sunday through Tuesday.

Day 1 Recap

The Oglethorpe men's golf team got their week at the Tartan Invitational in Ligonier Township, Pennsylvania, started with rounds of 20-over-par 308 and 14-over 302, putting themselves in 10th place after 36 holes at the prestigious Laurel Valley Golf Club. They sit at 34-over 610 for the tournament, 37 strokes back of first-place Emory.

The Stormy Petrels got a 1-over 73 in the second round from sophomore Tyler Rover. Coupled with his 5-over 78 in the morning's opening round, that put him at 7-over 151 for the tournament, tied for 24th. Senior Jacob Arnett came in just behind Rover, tied for 27th. He posted consecutive rounds of 4-over 76 to finish the day at 8-over 152. Freshman Justin Vincent came in at 9-over 153 for the day, while fellow freshman Tripp Murphy finished at 10-over 154. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa came in at 15-over 159 for the day.

Emory led after Day 1 with a 3-under 573, while Wittenberg came in six strokes back of that in second place. Methodist, Greensboro, Kenyon and Ohio Wesleyan rounded out the rest of the top five, with the latter two teams tying for fifth. Hosts Carnegie Mellon, Allegheny and New York University joined Oglethorpe in rounded out the top 10. 

The Petrels will be back in action at 8:30 a.m. Tuesday morning from the Laurel Valley course. The event will feature a shotgun start on Tuesday, with the entire field starting at the same time. The Petrels will tee off on Holes 14 through 18.
