Men's golf finishes fourth at Camp Lejeune

The Oglethorpe men's golf team finished in fourth place at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship Sunday on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Stormy Petrels shot 9-over-par 301 on Sunday, dropping behind Methodist and North Carolina Wesleyan -- who shot 299 -- and Hampden-Sydney -- who shot 300.

The Petrels were led on the day by freshman Justin Rickerson, who fired an impressive 2-under 71 on Paradise Point's Gold course to finish the weekend at 1-over 217. That mark put himself in the top 10. He was joined by senior Jacob Arnett, who also finished at 217 for the weekend after shooting 4-over 77 on Sunday. Sophomore Anthony DeRosa also shot a 77 on the day and finished in the top 20 with a 2-over 218 on the week.

This serves as the Petrels' 17th top four finish in 23 years at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate.

They'll be back in action from the Smoke Rise Country Club in Stone Mountain for the Emory Spring Invitational April 20-21.

Second Round Recap

The Oglethorpe men's golf team carded a 4-over-par 296 Saturday on the difficult Gold course at Paradise Point as part of the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. That put them in a tie for third place at even-par 572 after two rounds, just four strokes back of leaders Methodist. It also locked them in a third-place tie with North Carolina Wesleyan and put them just a stroke back of Hampden-Sydney, two teams the Petrels are jockeying for position with in terms of qualifying for the NCAA tournament at the end of the season.

The Petrels will now join those three teams and 11 others on the Gold course Sunday, where they'll play another 18 holes for the championship. The Petrels will be looking for their eighth Camp Lejeune title.

Sophomore Anthony DeRosa fired a 2-under 71 on the difficult course Saturday, pacing the Petrels on the day. Freshman Justin Rickerson started 4 over par through the first four holes, but recovered to finish his round at 3 under par over the final 12 holes, coming in at 1-over 74 on the day. Senior Jacob Arnett recovered from a 2 over par start to his round to finish right there at 2-over 75 on Saturday. Senior Kyle Shealy posted a 3-over 76 on the day.

First Round Recap

The Oglethorpe men's golf team got off to a good start in its quest for a seventh title at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship at the Paradise Point golf course on Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune in North Carolina. The Stormy Petrels shot 4-under-par 276 on the consolation Scarlet course Friday to finish the day in second place, just eight strokes behind North Carolina Wesleyan, who also played the Scarlet course.

Both teams will play the championship Gold course on Saturday. Methodist shot 296 Friday to lead the pack among those teams playing the Gold course on Friday, all of which will shift to the Scarlet course on Saturday.

Senior Jacob Arnett led the Petrels with an impressive 5-under 65 on the day, putting himself a stroke up on North Carolina Wesleyan's Grady Anderson and in first place after Day 1. Arnett tallied an eagle, three birdies and 14 pars on the day despite playing in rainy and windy conditions.
