Men's golf holds at No. 20 in latest coaches poll

The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) placed the Oglethorpe men's golf team at No. 20 in the latest Division III Bushnell Golfweek Coaches Poll. It marked the third straight poll release in which the organization ranked the Stormy Petrels, and the second straight time in which the team came in at No. 20.

The Petrels finished fourth at the Camp Lejeune Intercollegiate Golf Championship since the last poll release on April 1. They competed for the title over all three days April 5-7, posting a 9-over-par 873 over 54 holes at the Paradise Point Golf Course in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, and finishing just two strokes back of a tie for second.

Oglethorpe hits the course again Saturday and Sunday, when they head just down the road to Stone Mountain and the Smoke Rise Country Club for the Emory Spring Invitational. That serves as the final event for the Petrels prior to the SAA Golf Championships at the end of the month.

Emory garnered 18 of a possible 19 first-place votes and easily maintained the top spot for the seventh poll running. Huntingdon received the other top vote and remained in second, while Illinois Wesleyan remained in third. Wittenberg remained at No. 4 while Methodist slid to fifth after the two tied for fourth in the previous poll. Guilford and Southwestern (Texas) swapped spots, as did Redlands and Carnegie Mellon, and the quartet came in sixth through ninth, respectively. Washington and Lee remained at No. 10.

No. 19 Rhodes joined the Petrels among ranked SAA teams, as did No. 21 Berry who vaulted into the top 25. Sewanee also received votes, though not enough to be ranked.
