The Oglethorpe men's golf Team kicked off their fall season in Dickson, Tennessee, at Greystone Golf Club Sunday, playing 36 holes in a single day of competition at the SAA Fall Preview.
The team made a great all-around effort and finished in fourth place behind Sewanee, Berry and Rhodes. Team scores of 291 (+3) and 289 (+1), totaling 580 (+4), left the Petrels 10 shots back of tournament champions Sewanee. The team was led by junior Kenny Park, who posted rounds of 70 (-2) and 73 (+1) and finished in a tie for fifth for the tournament. Junior Anthony DeRosa fired 74 (+2) and 71 (-1) to claim a tie for 14th. Sophomores Isley McClure and Justin Rickerson shot 146 (+2) and 149 (+5), respectively. Senior Sean Fromme shot 78-72 to finish tied for 32nd and freshman Britt Pero shot 154 (+10) and placed tied for 43rd.
The Petrels also had a secondary team of individuals competing at the event, and that group was led by sophomore Tripp Murphy, who finished tied for fifth with a 1-under 143. Junior Logan Fuglestad posted rounds of 72 (E) and 75 (+3) to finish in a tie for 18th place. Connor Murphy and Michael O'Sullivan began their college careers each posting 6-over-par 150 to finish in a tie for 32nd. Rounding out the second team were juniors Tyler Rover and Walker Bottomley who shot 153 and 156, respectively. The second team finished in sixth place in the 13-team field. Two more Petrel golfers competed as individuals for the event. Freshmen Ned Narula shot 11-over 155 while fellow freshman Jake Allstun posted 161 to finish in a tie for 67th.
"It's always a disappointment to lose the conference preview," said Oglethorpe Director of Golf Jim Owen. "We've been greedy over the years, winning more than our share, so finishing fourth hurts a little more. I think we are all a little surprised we didn't shoot under par. We couldn't keep the bogeys off the card and settled for average play on the par-5s. We'll have to put this one behind us and focus on the major tournament coming up."
The team is back in action Sept. 14 and 15 at the PGA National Resort and Spa in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, competing in the NCAA Division III Fall Preview. There, the nation's best teams will gather and see where they stand to start the year. PGA National will host the NCAA Division III Golf Championships in May 2020.
