Men's golf finishes NCAA fall preview in 12th place

The Oglethorpe men's golf team completed their stay at the NCAA Division III Fall Preview, firing a 19-over-par 307 on Sunday to finish the tournament at 57-over 921, 47 strokes back of repeat champions Emory. The squad fell back three spots with Sunday's final round to finish in 12th place in the 18-team field.

Junior Kenny Park led the way for the Stormy Petrels on the week, shooting a 2-over-par 74 on Sunday to finish the event tied for 23rd at 11-over 227, 17 strokes back of Huntingdon's Drew Mathers, who earned the tournament's individual medal. Freshman Britt Pero finished the week in a tie for 38th after a final round 77, finishing the week at 14-over 230.

Sophomore Isley McClure and junior Anthony DeRosa finished tied for 47th place after McClure posted a final round 8-over-par 80, and DeRosa a 4-over 76 to finish off the week. Both players totaled 17-over 233s. Rounding out the flock of Petrels was sophomore Justin Rickerson. who carded a final round 85 to finish in 83rd place at 35 over.

"At a national field event of 18 of the top 25 in the country, the goal is to finish in the top half of the field," said Oglethorpe Director of Golf Jim Owen. "We stayed in it most of the weekend but just kind of faltered down the stretch on Sunday."

A tough end to Round 1 on Saturday led the Petrels to lose "11 strokes in about 45 minutes, seven of which counted against us dropping from fifth to 14th," continued Owen. "We recovered nicely in Round 2, but got off to a slow start in Round 3, and if you weren't controlling your golf ball, the wind was controlling it."

Emory won the tournament by six strokes over second-place Illinois Wesleyan, posting a 10-over 874 for the event. Huntingdon, St. Thomas (Minnesota), and Washington and Lee rounded out the top five.

The Petrels will be back in action Sept. 30th- Oct. 1 in Columbus, Ohio, at the Gordin Collegiate Classic at Columbus Country Club, where they will look to bounce back and continue their fall season charge.
