The Oglethorpe men's lacrosse team defeated Mount St. Joseph 7-3 in Cincinnati on Sunday to continue the best start in program history. They now sit at 3-1, matching the most-ever wins by a Stormy Petrel men's lacrosse team, and their three-game winning streak is the largest in program history.
The Stormy Petrels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first quarter Sunday. Freshman attackman Andrew Collins opened the scoring at the 12:45 mark of the opening quarter. He was followed by sophomore middie Brian Green and freshman middie Trevon Burkhead at the 7:49 and 3:43 marks, respectively, off assists from Collins and freshman middie Michael Burdge.
Junior middie Jack Brand was the lone goal-scorer in the second quarter. He tallied with 4:41 remaining in the period off an assist from Burkhead, giving Oglethorpe a 4-0 lead at halftime.
The Lions scored the opening goal of the second half, but the Petrels went right back to work, tallying three more. Junior attackman Cameron Ritter scored with 11:18 left in the quarter, and Burkhead followed at 9:18. Collins finished the Oglethorpe scoring with a man-up goal off an assist from Ritter with 6:11 left in the period.
The Petrels didn't score again, but Mount St. Joseph managed just two in the fourth quarter.
Burkhead and Collins finished with two goals apiece, and each collected four ground balls. Burdge led Oglethorpe with 10 ground balls, while Green had nine. Senior defenseman Andrew Kwapil, sophomore middie Will Rogers, and freshman defenseman Braeden Bernhardt all caused four turnovers. Freshman goalie Addison Irwin made eight saves.
The Petrels forced 38 Lion turnovers and collected 59 ground balls. They outshot Mount St. Joseph 18-11 on goal and were successful on 22 of 30 clear attempts.
The team will try to continue it's early-season win streak when they head back home for seven straight. They'll first welcome Methodist to the Oglethorpe Track and Field, and will play them Thursday at 4 p.m.
