Men's Soccer Falls to No. 14 Washington and Lee to Start Season

The Oglethorpe men's soccer team got their season started at Emory's Sonny Carter Invitational Friday afternoon with a rematch of the final game of their 2017 season. They took on the preseason No. 14 Washington and Lee Generals, who defeated them in a shootout in the second round of the NCAA tournament in Lexington, Virginia, in November.

Washington and Lee found an outstanding start with two goals in the first 12 minutes. The Stormy Petrels fought back twice from a 2-goal deficit, scoring a goal in each half to cut the General lead to one. However, it was Washington and Lee who prevailed, winning 3-2.

The Petrels gave up a pair of goals in the first half, with the Generals scoring in the fifth and 12th minutes. Oglethorpe quickly responded with a tally in the 15th, as junior forward Gabriel Alvarez took a pass from junior forward Matt Ward and scored on a blistering shot from outside the box. From there, the Petrels and Generals went back and forth over the remainder of the half, with Oglethorpe outshooting Washington and Lee 8-6 over the period. The score was 2-1 at halftime.

Washington and Lee got another goal early in the second half and took a 3-1 advantage in the 57th minute. However, Oglethorpe responded again in the 73rd, as freshman midfielder Angel Guevara finished a feed from freshman forward Abraham Lopez to make it 3-2 and give the Petrels a chance at the end. They outshot the Generals 7-5 in the period, but were unable to nab the equalizer.

For the game, Oglethorpe outshot Washington and Lee 15-11 overall, while the teams finished with five shots on goal apiece. The Generals took five corner kicks, to the Petrels' three.

Junior midfielder Adam Sole and senior midfielder Topher Marshall led the squad with three shots apiece, each of them putting one on target.

The Petrels will be back at Emory for Day 2 of the Sonny Carter Invitational on Saturday. They'll take on Hardin-Simmons at 4:30 p.m. from the Woodruff P.E. Center field. The Cowboys fell to host Emory 2-0 in the second game of Friday's doubleheader.
