The Oglethorpe men's tennis team earned a clean sweep of the Piedmont Lions Wednesday on the Howell Courts, blanking the visitors 9-0. With the win, the Stormy Petrels improved to 8-4 on the season.
Sophomores Walker Benson and Calvin Schneider blanked their opponents 8-0 from the No. 2 line, while seniors Michael Santaloci and Matthew Magee took their match 8-1 at No. 3. The top-line team of senior Richard Johnson and freshman Connor Sisson found themselves locked in a tough one, but they prevailed 8-5 to give the Petrels a 3-0 lead headed to doubles.
Johnson make quick work of his opponent at No. 2, winning 6-1, 6-3 to bring the Petrels to within a point of clinching the dual match. Benson was tested in the second set but prevailed in a tiebreak, winning his match 6-3, 7-6(5) to give the Petrels their fifth point of the match, clinching victory. Junior Zoe Raymond won 6-1, 4-6, 6-0 at No. 3, while Santaloci prevailed 6-1, 6-2 on the No. 4 line. The final two matches went to a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set, but the Petrels won both. Magee prevailed 4-6, 6-1, 1-0(3) at No. 5, while Schneider won 5-7, 6-4, 1-0(4) at No. 6.
"I was concerned we might have a letdown after our big conference weekend," said head coach Peter Howell, "but we took care of business in the doubles competition to get us on our way. Richard Johnson and Walker Benson both continued playing very well at the top of the lineup."
The Petrels now head to Danville, Kentucky, to take on Centre Saturday morning. They'll battle the Colonels at 10 a.m., then will head to Tennessee to go against No. 18 Sewanee.
