The Oglethorpe cross country teams got their seasons off to solid starts Friday night at the JSU Strut's Season Opener, hosted by Jacksonville State in Oxford, Alabama. The men's team finished fourth at the meet, coming in ahead of Division I schools Troy, Mercer, Alabama State and Jacksonville State. The women's team saw two of their four runners finish in the top 70 of the field, with freshman Sarah Brummett earning a spot in the top half of the women's field.
The men's side finished with 113 points for the meet and posted an average time of 16 minutes, 11.98 seconds on the five-kilometer Choccolocco Park course. Senior Rodrigo Meade led the way with a fifth-place finish, crossing the line in 15:42.4. Senior Mateo Villa also earned a spot in the top 20, finishing 16th with a time of 16:00.9. Senior Nick Evans garnered a top 25 mark, finishing 24th in 16:08, while sophomore Thomas Ridley came in 42nd in 16:29.6 and freshman Patrick Smith garnered 53rd place in 16:39. The Stormy Petrels put 12 runners in the top half of the field.
On the women's side, Brummett finished tops among the squad in 62nd place. She got around the four-kilometer course in 17:15.1. Junior Reagan Goodwin finished 68th in 17:27.6, while fellow junior Courtney Stuart came in 85th in 18:42.8. Freshman Robin Stein rounded out the Oglethorpe finishers with a time of 19:30.8.
The Petrels will next take to the course on Sept. 13 when they travel to East Ridge, Tennessee, for the UTC Twilight Meet. After that, they'll go back to Tennessee for their next two meets, the Rhodes College Invitational in Memphis and the Sewanee Invitational in Sewanee.
