Women's basketball completes perfect weekend in Kentucky with 67-58 win over Otterbein

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team completed a perfect weekend at the Lee's Famous Recipe/Hampton Inn Classic in Danville, Kentucky, Saturday, handing the Otterbein Cardinals their first loss of the season 67-58. The victory improved the Stormy Petrels to 5-1 on the season.

The Petrels pulled away from Otterbein in the second half after a close opening 30 minutes, outscoring them 42-33 over the course of the second half. They enjoyed a 15-7 advantage off turnovers, a 28-12 edge in the paint, and a 14-8 lead in second-chance points. 

Oglethorpe got outstanding play from their backcourt, led by junior guard Taylor Smith with 13 points, nine rebounds and five steals. Sophomore guard Nikki Reed added 12 points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals, while freshman guard Olivia Herrera added 14 points on 3-of-5 from 3-point range.

After Otterbein matched a 4-0 Petrel run with a 6-0 run of their own to begin the opening quarter, the teams traded baskets the remainder of the period and finished the opening 10 minutes tied 12-12. The Petrels went on an 11-5 spurt in the second quarter to take a 23-17 lead with just under 3:40 left in the opening half, but the Cardinals responded with an 8-2 spurt to close out the half and tied it up 25-25.

The Petrels began the third on an 8-4 stretch of their own to build a 33-29 with 7:20 left in the period. Otterbein cut it to a 1-point game with five minutes remaining in the third, but Oglethorpe pushed back ahead and maintained a 41-38 lead into the fourth quarter. The Cardinals came back to take a 42-41 lead with 8:21 remaining in the contest and pushed that to 43-41 with just under 8 minutes left. However, Oglethorpe responded with an 18-5 run over a 6-minute stretch to turn the game into their favor and take a 61-50 lead with just over a minute remaining.

Oglethorpe returns to action Tuesday evening, when they host Covenant at 6 p.m. from Dorough Field House in their final game before the Thanksgiving break.
