Women's golf finishes eighth at 18-hole Callaway Gardens Collegiate

The Oglethorpe women's golf team finished eighth out of 15 teams at the Callaway Gardens Collegiate Invitational on Saturday. They shot an 18-hole score of 41-over-par 333 to finish 25 strokes behind first-place Methodist on the day.

The Stormy Petrels saw all five competitors on the countable scorecard finish in the top half of the field. However, none of them was able to finish in the top 25. Sophomore Alivia Mattiace had the best round of the day for the Petrels, shooting 9-over 82 on the Callaway Gardens Mountain View course. She finished the event tied for 28th, seven strokes back of a tie for individual medal between Centre's Bailey Plourde and Washington and Lee's Beth Ann Townsend.

Senior Katie Hanley came in tied for 32nd at 10-over 83, while fellow senior Hailey Willman finished tied for 37th with juniors Mara Tiger and Ana Garcia. All three posted scores of 11-over 84.

Sophomore Emma Meadows golfed as an individual and posted a round of 15-over 88.

Methodist won the tournament with a 16-over 308. Pomona-Pitzer came in second, seven strokes back. Christopher Newport, Berry, Huntingdon and Washington and Lee rounded out the top five with the latter two tying for fifth.

The tournament was cut from 36 to 18 holes due to rain during Friday's scheduled first round.

The Petrels will next be in action March 15-17, when they host the Jekyll Island Collegiate Invitational on the southeast Georgia coast.
