Women's golf starts season No. 17 in WGCA coaches' poll

The Oglethorpe women's golf team will start the season at No. 17 in the Women's Golf Coaches Association (WGCA) Coaches Poll. The organization released their preseason rankings this week, and it marked the first time that the Stormy Petrels have been ranked in the WGCA's Division III preseason poll.

The Petrels reached a high of 16th in the poll over the course of the 2018-19 season, that coming in the final release of the season. They finished second at the SAA Golf Championships in Dickson, Tennessee, the following week, matching their highest-ever finish at the event.

Defending national champion New York University topped the 2019-20 preaseason poll with 10 of a possible 14 first-place votes. Defending national runner-up Williams slotted in right below with three of the remaining four top votes, while Methodist begins the season at No. 3. Claremont-M-S received the other first-place vote and earned the No. 4 slot, while George Fox rounded out the top five.

The Petrels served as one of four SAA teams to earn spots in the top 25. Defending SAA champion Rhodes came in at No. 7, Berry just ahead of Oglethorpe at No. 16, and Sewanee at No. 24. Centre and Birmingham-Southern also received votes in the poll.

Oglethorpe will hit the links on Sept. 14 and 15 when they travel to Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, for the NCAA Division III Fall Preview at PGA National Resort and Spa, the site of the 2020 NCAA Division III Golf Championships.
