The Oglethorpe women's soccer team hung tough against Benedictine (Illinois) Friday night at the Grand Park Sports Campus in Westfield, Indiana, and earned a late game-winner from freshman midfielder Kieran Burkey to secure a 1-0 win over the Eagles.
The Stormy Petrels applied pressure throughout much of the second half, getting closer and closer to finding the opening goal. They put two shots off the post after the 70-minute mark, but still couldn't find a goal. That changed in the 78th minute, though. Senior forward Kayla Trice fired a shot that was saved by the Benedictine goalkeeper, but the rebound deflected to Burkey. The Petrel freshman made no mistake with her finish, and Oglethorpe had their lead.
As the contest advanced into the final 10 minutes, junior goalkeeper Lindsey Bolas came up huge with a series of saves, including one huge one with just a couple minutes remaining. She finished with seven stops on the night and earned the clean sheet. The entire Petrel back line also stepped up big to help Bolas preserve the win.
The two teams finished even in shots with 10-apiece, and took four corner kicks to the Eagles' two.
With their season-opening win in tow, the Petrels will now return to Atlanta for their home opener against Allen Tuesday at 5 p.m.
