Women's tennis closes spring break with 7-2 win over Transylvania

The Oglethorpe women's tennis team closed its spring break trip Wednesday afternoon with a 7-2 win over the Transylvania Pioneers in Altamonte Springs, Florida. With the win, the Stormy Petrels improved to 6-1 on the season. They won four of their five spring break matches.

The doubles competition between the two teams was tight. The No. 3 doubles tandem of senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips fell behind 4-0 and still trailed 6-3 late in the match. However, they won five games in a row after that, turning the tables on their opponents and winning 8-6. The top-line duo of junior Hannah Dattilo and senior Shannon Cruz went back and forth with their opponents and wound up tied 7-7, sending the match to a tiebreaker. Dattilo and Cruz jumped ahead in the tiebreak and won 7-3. Senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki had an easier time at No. 2, winning 8-2 and giving the Petrels a 3-0 lead headed into singles despite the highly-competitive doubles session.

That gave the Petrels a big leg up, and they took advantage with a couple of easy wins early in singles, clinching the dual match victory. Bielicki won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 5 and Phillps prevailed 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6, giving Oglethorpe all the matches they would need. Dattilo added a three-set win -- with a 10-point tiebreaker standing in for the third frame -- winning the first set 6-4 then prevailing 10-7 in the tiebreak after dropping the second set 6-2. Abood won her No. 4 match 6-3, 6-2, as well.

Cruz dropped a tight one in a 10-point tiebreaker. She came back after dropping the first set 6-2 and swept the second 6-0. She fell 10-8 in the tiebreaker, however.

"This was a great spring break trip for our girls, finishing with a 4-1 record," said Oglethorpe head coach Peter Howell. "We are much more match-tough and ready for conference play to begin later this month. Players had a lot of close matches, and we came out on top more often than not."

The Petrels return home for the start of SAA play on March 30, when they'll take on Birmingham-Southern at 1 p.m.
