The Oglethorpe women's tennis team had a tough matchup Sunday afternoon against a Millsaps team ranked 10th in the Atlantic South region. They hung tough but eventually fell 5-2 to the visiting Majors, with the match played to decision due to early wet-court delays. The loss dropped the Stormy Petrels to 6-3 on the season overall and 0-2 in SAA play.
All four doubles matches were competitive but the Majors took two of the three. Senior Charlotte Disley and junior Elizabeth Bielicki fell 8-4 in the two-line match, as did junior Hannah Dattilo and senior Shannon Cruz to their regionally-ranked opponent on the top line. However, senior Delaney Abood and sophomore Lisette Phillips stormed back from a big deficit in the No. 3 match and won 8-6, keeping the Petrels in it headed to singles.
Oglethorpe fell in straight sets in the third and sixth line matches, though, bringing Millsaps to the brink of clinching the dual match at 4-1. Bielicki staved it off briefly, winning a 10-point tiebreak in lieu of a third set, taking her match 6-3, 0-6, 1-0(5) to make it 4-2. However, Dattilo fell to her regionally-ranked opponent on the top line, dropping the match 6-2, 6-2 to give Millsaps the victory.
The Petrels will be back in action Wednesday afternoon when they host Piedmont on the Howell Courts at 3:30 p.m.
