The Oglethorpe volleyball team moved to 3-0 to start the season at the Emory Classic Saturday, defeating Belhaven 3-1 from the Woodruff PE Center. The Stormy Petrels won two of three hotly-contested sets to start the match, then cruised to a 25-19 win in the fourth to secure the victory.
The Petrels and Blazers went back and forth to start the first set and the score was tied 15-15. Oglethorpe went on a 4-1 run to push out to a 20-16 lead, though, and led 22-17 late in the stanza. Belhaven ran off three straight points to make it 22-20, but Oglethorpe won three of the next five to win the set 25-22.
Oglethorpe got off to a 10-2 lead to start the second set, but the Blazers responded with a 5-1 run to pull it back to within four, 13-9. They then vaulted their way right back into the set with a 7-1 stretch, making the Petrel lead just 17-16. Though Oglethorpe won back-to-back points after that, Belhaven ran off three more to tie the score at 19-19. The Petrels took a 22-19 lead, but the Blazers won five straight points after that to obtain set point at 24-22. The Petrels staved it off with consecutive winners to tie it 24-24, but Belhaven went back ahead and had set point again, 25-24. However, the Petrels bounced back and ran off three straight to turn the tables on Belhaven and win the second set 27-25.
It was the Blazers getting off to a big start in the third set, though, building an 11-5 lead. Oglethorpe used a 3-0 run and a 4-0 run to bounce right back and tie the score 13-13, then ran off three more points to push ahead 16-14. It was a 7-1 run overall for the Petrels. Three straight Belhaven points put them back ahead, but the Petrels embarked on a 6-0 run to build a 22-17 lead late in the set. As the two teams jockeyed toward the end of the set, though, the Blazers outscored the Petrels 12-5. They staved off a match point and the Petrels staved off three set points, but Belhaven edged out the Petrels 29-27 in the end.
The fourth set proved competitive early as Belhaven looked to stay alive and Oglethorpe looked to close the match out. The Blazers edged out to a 14-13 lead, but the Petrels responded with five consecutive points to take an 18-14 lead. The Blazers cut that margin to two, but Oglethorpe finished on a 5-1 run to take the set, 25-19, and the match with it.
Junior defensive specialist Hailee Bugg accrued 26 digs to lead the team, while sophomore setters Emma Williams and Grace Holder totaled 20 and 17 assists, respectively. Junior middle hitter TaKorya Green collected 16 kills and sophomore outside hitter Emilee Etter added 12.
The Petrels will be back in action from Franklin, Indiana, Friday and Saturday for the Franklin College Tournament. They'll take on Franklin at 7 p.m. Friday and then go against Marietta and Baldwin Wallace on Saturday.
