Volleyball falls to Marietta and Baldwin Wallace on second day of Franklin College Tournament

The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell in a pair of matches Saturday to close out the Franklin College Tournament in Indiana. They dropped their first match of the day to Marietta 3-0 before taking the first set but then falling in three straight to Baldwin Wallace 3-1. The results dropped the Stormy Petrels to 4-2 on the young season.

The Petrels fell to the Yellow Jackets in their second match of the day by a scoreline of 21-25, 25-13, 25-17, 25-23. They got off to an excellent start in the match, running out to an 11-4 advantage in the opening set. The two teams traded points for awhile after that, but Oglethorpe again nudged further ahead with a 4-1 mini-run to take a 19-12 lead. Baldwin Wallace came back with a 6-2 stretch to cut the Petrel lead to 22-19. However, Oglethorpe won consecutive points after that to attain set point. The Yellow Jackets staved it off twice, but the Petrels eventually put them away 25-21.

That turned out to mark the high point of the match for the Petrels. After taking a 3-0 lead in the second set, they saw their opponent roll off a 16-6 stretch to take a 16-9 lead. Baldwin Wallace then finished on an 8-1 run to take the second set 25-13.

Oglethorpe again took a very early lead in the third set, 5-2. The Yellow Jackets again turned the set into their favor, though, going on a 6-1 run to take an 8-6 lead. After the Petrels came back to nudge ahead 13-12, Baldwin Wallace responded with five straight points to take a 17-13 lead. They finished with an 8-2 spurt to take the third set 25-17.

The Petrels got off to a good start in the must-win fourth set, going ahead 7-3 with a run of six straight points. Baldwin Wallace embarked on a 12-3 stretch, though, to turn the set into their favor at 15-10. Oglethorpe answered with a 6-1 run of their own to tie the score 16-16. The score was still tied at 20-20, but the Yellow Jackets ran off three straight and then finished it off with two of the final three points, winning 25-23.

Freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner led the Petrels with 14 kills, while junior outside hitter TaKorya Green added 11 while hitting .320. Sophomore setter Emma Williams recorded 27 assists and senior defensive specialist Alex Prots led the squad with 15 digs.

In the first match of the day, the Petrels fell to the Marietta Pioneers 25-21, 25-18, 25-20. Oglethorpe got out to an 11-5 lead early in the first set, but Marietta responded with a 4-1 run of their own and followed it with a big 12-3 stretch to turn the set on its head, 21-17. The Petrels ran off three straight to pull to within a points, 21-20, but the Pioneers finished it off from there, winning 25-21.

The Petrels went ahead 7-2 early in the second set, then extended their lead back out to five, 12-7, after Marietta cut it to 8-6. However, the Pioneers went on a huge 10-1 run to turn the set around and take a 17-13 lead. They went on to finish on an 8-3 run and take the set 25-18.

As with every set the Petrels played Saturday, they got off to a good start in the third. They built a 6-3 lead in the opening moments of the stanza, but Marietta ran off six straight to vault ahead 10-7. After Oglethorpe came back to tie it 13-13, the Pioneers finished by outscoring them 12-7 over the remainder of the set, securing a 25-20 win.

Sophomore outside hitter Emilee Etter led the way with 11 kills for the match. Sophomore setter Grace Holder recorded 17 assists, while Williams contributed 11. Prots led the Petrels with 12 digs.

The Petrels will return to Georgia and be back in action Saturday, Sept. 14, against Covenant. They'll travel to Lookout Mountain for the match, which is set to get started at noon.
