The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-1 to the visiting Birmingham-Southern Panthers Saturday in their home opener at Dorough Field House. After dropping the first two sets 25-11 and 25-21, respectively, the Stormy Petrels came back with a 25-21 win in the third. The visiting Panthers clinched the match with a 25-13 victory in the fourth set, though, dropping the home side to 4-5 on the season overall and 0-2 in SAA play.
The Panthers jumped all over Oglethorpe in the opening set, taking a 22-6 lead and all but clinching the stanza. They went on to win that 25-11, then ran out to an 11-3 lead early in the second set. The Petrels responded with a 5-1 mini-run to pull it back to 12-8, but Birmingham-Southern ran off four of the next five points to make it 16-9. Down 18-11, Oglethorpe responded with a 5-0 stretch to pull back to within two, 18-16. The visitors took a 23-18 lead, but Oglethorpe fought back to make it 23-20. BSC eventually put it away 25-21.
The third set saw Oglethorpe take an early 7-2 lead. A 6-1 Birmingham-Southern run put them right back even at 8-8, and they eventually took an 11-10 lead. However, Oglethorpe continued fighting and the two teams went back and forth for stretches. The visitors took an 18-16 lead, but the Petrels bounced back. They finished the set on a 9-3 run and stayed alive, winning it 25-21.
The Panthers quickly took a 15-6 lead early in the fourth set, though. Oglethorpe never really got back into it and Birmingham-Southern took it 25-13.
Sophomore setter Grace Holder led all participants with 30 assists for the match, while freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner and junior libero Hailee Bugg added 11 digs each and Bugg recorded three service aces.
The Petrels are set to be back in action Sunday, when they welcome Millsaps to Dorough Field House at noon for another SAA tilt. They'll also take on non-conference opponent Huntingdon at 3 p.m.
