The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell 3-0 to the homestanding Millsaps Majors Saturday morning in Jackson, Mississippi. They lost the three sets by scores of 25-13, 25-14 and 25-22, falling to 5-14 on the season overall and 0-9 in SAA play.
The Stormy Petrels did not get off to a good start, as Millsaps rushed out to a 9-2 lead early. The teams traded points for a brief period, but the Majors started another run, this one a 12-5 spurt, to take a 24-12 lead and bring themselves to within a point of clinching the set. They did just that two points later.
The second set began in much the same fashion, with the Majors taking a 16-7 lead after a 14-5 run. The Petrels stormed back into the set, though, running off seven straight to pull to within just two, 16-14. Those were the last points Oglethorpe scored in the set, though. Millsaps finished with nine points in a row to win the set 25-14.
Millsaps got off to a fast start in the third set, as well. They pushed out to a 6-2 lead early, but the Petrels responded with a 9-2 run and pushed into a 12-9 lead. The Majors came back to tie it with a 5-2 spurt and made it 14-14, but Oglethorpe ran off four points in a row to re-take the lead, 18-14. Millsaps went on their match-clinching run at that point, though, outscoring the visitors 9-2 over the next 11 points and pushing back ahead 23-20. The Petrels finished consecutive points to pull to within one, but Millsaps finished it off 25-22.
Sophomore outside hitter Emilee Etter led Oglethorpe with 10 kills, while sophomore setter Emma Williams contributed 17 assists and four kills. Senior defensive specialist Alex Prots finished the match with 16 digs.
The Petrels will next be in action Sunday afternoon when they travel to Birmingham, Alabama. They'll take on the Birmingham-Southern Panthers there at 1 p.m. Eastern.
