The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw their season come to a close Friday evening in Birmingham, Alabama, as they fell to the homestanding Birmingham-Southern Panthers 3-0 in the first round of the SAA Tournament, dropping sets 25-16, 25-12 and 25-14. The loss meant that the Stormy Petrels end the season with a 6-20 overall record.
Birmingham-Southern got off to a fast start in the opening set, going on a 7-1 run at the outset. The Petrels came back with three straight points to make it 7-4, then the two teams traded points for a time to make the score 12-9 in favor of the Panthers. The home side took control of the set shortly after that, though, rolling off an 8-1 stretch to take a 20-10 lead. Birmingham-Southern cruised to the 25-16 win from there.
The second set began in similar fashion, as the Panthers went on a 12-4 run to begin the stanza. Oglethorpe answered back with three straight points to make it 12-7, but Birmingham-Southern put the set away with a 12-2 run which gave them set point at 24-9. The Petrels staved off set point three times, but the Panthers eventually put it away 25-12 to take a 2-0 lead.
The Petrels got off to a 3-0 start in the third set and hung in early, taking a 6-5 lead. Birmingham-Southern embarked on another big run from there, though, going on a 13-4 spurt and taking an 18-10 lead. They then finished it off with a 6-1 stretch and won the set 25-14.
Oglethorpe was led on the day by senior libero Alex Prots, who recorded 15 digs on the evening. Sophomore setter Emma Williams led the team with 12 assists, while freshman outside hitter Jackie Schner and junior middle hitter TaKorya Green recorded six kills each.
