Another banner year for No. 9 Petrels

DICKSON, Tenn.— The No. 9 Oglethorpe men's golf team posted a final round 293 to secure the Southern Athletic Association Conference Championship title for the second year in a row and fifth time in school history on Sunday. The Stormy Petrels once again ran away with the title, posting a 13-stroke lead after two rounds and finishing 12 shots ahead of second place Rhodes College. Head coach Jim Owen earned SAA coach of the year, and the championship automatically qualified the Petrels for the NCAA Men's Golf National Championship.

Sophomore Beck Lewis earned the individual title with a 73 on Sunday. Lewis won the tournament by four shots at a cumulative 13 under par after a record-breaking second round 63 on Saturday.

Senior Tripp Murphy had the next best finish for the Petrels. Murphy carded the lowest round for the team on day three with a 2 under par 70. Murphy finished T4 on the individual leaderboard at 6 under par total.

Colin Alexander ended the day with a 74. Alexander steadily moved up the leaderboard each day and finished T17. Michael O'Sullivan contributed the fourth score for the team with a 76. O'Sullivan also finished inside the top 25 at T22. Sam Karman and Thomas Reininger finished close behind at T26 and 28.

Tournament Notes

  • Oglethorpe's five SAA titles have come in 2013, 2016, 2019, 2022 and 2023. The Petrels have finished in the top three every year since the SAA's formation, and they have finished in the top two eight of the 10 times the championship has been held.
  • Oglethorpe led the field in par three and par five scoring all three days of the tournament.
  • The Petrels played the par threes at 5 over par and the par fives at 10 under par.
  • Oglethorpe also led the field in birdies with a total of 75.
  • Lewis was second in the field for par three scoring at 1 under par.
  • Lewis and Murphy were tied for first in par five scoring at 6 under par.
  • Lewis led the field in birdies with 10 and Murphy was second with 16.
  • The championship was hosted by Sewanee at Greystone Golf Club in Dickson, Tennessee.

Up Next

Oglethorpe will head the to the NCAA Division III Men's Golf National Championship. This is a 72-hole event at Keene Run & Champions Trace in Lexington, Kentucky. The tournament is scheduled for May 16-19.
