Game Operations Staff

Role and Responsibilities

Each game operations position will have one or two primary responsibilities at the scorers table or press box for home Oglethorpe athletics events, specifically for soccer, volleyball, basketball, lacrosse and baseball. Working evenings and weekends will be required. Game operations staff must know how to perform the duties of their position (some basic training will be available).

Key Skills

  • Moderate knowledge of the sport being covered (some basic training will be available)
  • Ability to make quick decisions and interpret plays on the field/court without supervision
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Must attend home events, which take place in the evenings and on weekends
  • Must arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Must plan to stay at least 10 minutes after the conclusion of the contest

Public Address Announcer
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The public address announcer is responsible for performing all announcements at home Oglethorpe athletic events. Announcements include pregame welcome and player introductions, in-game updates and information, and postgame wrap-up and closing comments.

Key Skills

  • Comfortable talking on a microphone in front of a large number of people
  • Ability to read clearly from a script
  • Ability to make impromptu remarks and announcements
  • Basic knowledge of the sport being announced: terminology, scoring, rules, etc.
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Must attend home events, which take place in the evenings and on weekends
  • Must arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Must plan to stay at least 10 minutes after the conclusion of the contest

Broadcast Commentator
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The broadcast commentator is responsible for performing the audio broadcast that accompanies the video streams of home Oglethorpe athletic events. This includes doing a pregame welcome and brief introduction of the event, play-by-play (or color) commentary during the event, and a postgame wrap-up after the event.

Key Skills

  • Comfortable talking on air in a “radio” style setting
  • Ability to make impromptu remarks and announcements on a regular basis
  • Advanced knowledge of the sport being announced: terminology, scoring, rules, etc.
  • Basic knowledge of the technological equipment used to make such broadcasts
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Must attend home events, which take place in the evenings and on weekends
  • Must arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Must plan to stay at least 10 minutes after the conclusion of the contest

Statistician
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The statistician is responsible for keeping the official stats at home Oglethorpe athletic events. These athletic events include volleyball, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and baseball.

Key Skills

  • Knowledge of how to keep stats relative to the sport; some basic training will be available
    • E.g. what constitutes an assist in basketball, hit vs. error in baseball, etc.
  • Must be able to react quickly and make changes in a timely manner
  • Must be highly attentive to detail and able to properly interpret every play that happens on the field/court
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Must attend home matches, which take place in the evenings and on weekends
  • Must arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Must plan to stay at least 30 minutes after the conclusion of the contest

Social Media Manager
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The social media manager is responsible for overseeing the content for Oglethorpe’s athletics social media accounts, namely @GoPetrels and any other sport-specific accounts. This includes but is not limited to producing routine/daily posts to highlight student-athlete success on and off the field/court; taking photos and organizing photos to allow others to use in posts; generating graphics with PhotoShop and Boxout Sports; and developing regular strategies for Oglethorpe’s various social media accounts.

This position will meet regularly with a committee to discuss a social media strategy/calendar and will have regular contact with members of certain sports’ coaching staffs to help implement that plan.

Key Skills

  • Must be highly attentive to detail and able to write content without making mistakes
  • Knowledgeable of social media content and current trends
  • Creativity as it relates to making announcements of athletics news and information
  • Experience with Adobe Creative Cloud, especially PhotoShop, InDesign and/or Premiere
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • This position will have a high demand on time and will often require unpredictable work times
  • Much of this work will take place in the evenings and on weekends, revolving around athletic teams’ schedules
  • Scheduled office hours will also be required

Writer
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The writer in the sports information office is responsible for producing written content for Oglethorpe’s athletics website, www.GoPetrels.com. This includes writing game recaps, season previews, feature stories and general press releases relative to Oglethorpe’s athletics teams. In many cases, they will be responsible for connecting with the team’s coach or a player to use quotes in their story.

Key Skills

  • Must be highly attentive to detail and able to write content without making mistakes
  • Advanced knowledge of the sport being covered: terminology, scoring, rules, etc.
  • Must be comfortable writing stories for Oglethorpe’s athletics website
    • This includes game recaps, general news, and/or feature stories on student-athletes
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • As a writer for certain sports, it will be helpful, although not entirely required, that you attend home athletic events, which take place in the evening and on weekends
  • Writing recaps of events will require working evenings and weekends, often late at night
  • Other written content for the athletics website can be completed during office hours which would take place weekdays during the day

Photographer
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The photographer in the sports information office is responsible for photographing student-athletes at Oglethorpe’s athletics events for use on the athletics website, social media and various other places. This includes but is not limited to shooting action shots, celebration shots, team huddles, sideline pictures, etc.

Other related duties will be organizing photos and uploading them to Oglethorpe’s athletics website and other similar platforms, creating galleries, editing photos and creating graphics.

Key Skills

  • Advanced knowledge of photography equipment and the general operation of a camera
  • Knowledge of what constitutes a good sports action photo
    • Positioning, timing, what to look for, etc.
    • Knowing what types of photos are good for different purposes
  • Owning/using your own camera is a plus
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Must be able to attend the vast majority of home athletic events, which take place in the evening and on weekends
  • Office hours also will be required, which can take place during the day on weekdays
  • In some cases may be required to photograph teams at practices or in preseason competitions
  • In some rarer cases opportunities may arise to photograph teams off campus

Videographer
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The videographer in the sports information office is responsible for taking video of student-athletes at Oglethorpe’s athletics events for use on the athletics website, social media and various other places. This includes but is not limited to capturing highlight plays in formal competitions, filming practices and other noncompetition content for purposes such as B-roll, conducting interviews with coaches and student-athletes, and generating creative video ideas.

Other related duties will be related to video editing.

  • Advanced knowledge of the sport being announced: terminology, scoring, rules, etc.

  • Must arrive at least 45 minutes prior to the scheduled start time
  • Must plan to stay at least 10 minutes after the conclusion of the contest

Archivist
Oglethorpe University Athletics

Role and Responsibilities

The sports information archivist is primarily responsible for researching content to be posted in Oglethorpe’s athletics record books. This includes compiling lists of competitions, noting wins and losses for each team; tracking history of conference championships and tournaments; finding information related to national tournament appearances and national polls; creating all-time rosters; and gathering relevant historic photos. This position will require a lot of data entry.

  • Must be highly attentive to detail and able to complete tasks thoroughly without mistakes
  • Must be highly organized and able to compile data in consistent formats
  • Must be able to perform a high volume of data entry
  • Professional and courteous

Timing and Availability

  • Office hours will be required and can be completed any time on weekdays during the day
  • Some remote work will be acceptable
