No. 10 men’s golf 2023 season recap

ATLANTA – The No. 10 Oglethorpe Stormy Petrels recorded another excellent season under the leadership of Head Coach Jim Owen, as the men's golf team brought home several major wins and new records.

The Petrels began the season by taking eighth place at both the Gate City Invitational and the NCAA Division III Fall Preview. Oglethorpe went on to take runner-up at the Golfweek Division III Invitational, in which Michael O'Sullivan took the individual title. The team also recorded their first of many historical moments at the Golfweek Invitational after recording the lowest team score in program history on day two of the event.

The Petrels headed into spring ranked No. 10 in NCAA Division III and continued to show improvement and post stellar results. Oglethorpe took fourth of 18 at the Tiger Invitational, sixth of 30 at the Jekyll island Invitational, then wrapped the regular season with a victory at the Camp Lejeune Invitational.

At the Southern Athletic Association Championships, the Petrels claimed their second conference title in a row to give the program five total. Oglethorpe posted the best first round in conference championship history, recorded the all-time lowest round on day two, and marked the best finish in SAA championship history.

Beck Lewis took the individual title after breaking the SAA's individual low round record on the second day, and Tripp Murphy finished T4 after carding the lowest round for the team on the final day.

Oglethorpe capped the season with yet another appearance at the NCAA Division III National Championships, taking 12th as a team with Murphy finishing T28. The Petrels were one of only five teams with three or more eagles, thanks to O'Sullivan, Lewis and Colin Alexander. Alexander was out front for the Petrels on the final day as the team finished seventh in the field in par 5 scoring while Murphy ranked in the top 30 for par 4 scoring, and Lewis in the top 30 for par 5 scoring.
