ATLANTA—A sweep of doubles followed by singles-opening wins from Jefferson Page and Bailey Raymond helped Oglethorpe secure a quick 8-1 win over Hendrix Saturday afternoon at Downing Howell Tennis Courts.
Oglethorpe earned the win with points from each of the first five completed matches, all happening in prompt succession to move the Stormy Petrels to 7-4 (1-1 Southern Athletic Association) on the season.
Zach Raymond/Page turned in an 8-2 win at No. 3 doubles, B. Raymond/Figge Pernfors turned in an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles, then Daniel Cohen/Sam Wasko had the closest doubles match at No. 1 doubles, coming from behind to win 8-7 (7-3). It made the match score 3-0 heading to singles, and Page and Raymond were quick to send Oglethorpe to the match victory with wins at Nos. 3 and 2 singles, respectively.
Page won 6-2, 6-3 and B. Raymond won 6-2, 6-0.
From there, Oglethorpe went on to win three more matches to round out their first SAA win of the season. Z. Raymond won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 6 singles, then Noah George and Pernfors won within moments of each other at No. 5 and No. 4. George won 6-3, 6-2. Pernfors played a pair of tiebreaks and won 6-1, 6-7 (4-7), 10-4.
Season Notes
- B. Raymond (7-1) and George (7-2) are the singles leaders so far this season for the Stormy Petrels. Z. Raymond follows next at 5-4.
- Cohen and Wasko together have posted a similar impressive record in doubles at 8-2, going 7-2 at No. 1 doubles. Z. Raymond is 7-2 himself at doubles, and Page is 6-3.
- Oglethorpe has now won four of the last five matches, with the only loss coming against No. 2 Emory on the road.
