The Oglethorpe volleyball team finished eighth in the SCAC
Tournament this weekend at Dorough Field House and the Schmidt
Center.
It was the best finish the team has had at the conference
tournament in over 10 years.
The weekend began when the 10th-seeded Petrels upset
seventh-seeded Millsaps 3-2 in the first round on Friday.
Oglethorpe took the first two games of the match 25-16 and 25-20,
respectively. But Millsaps fought back to take the next two games
25-22 and 25-15. respectively. That set up a thrilling fifth and
deciding game, which the Petrels won 15-11 to take their first SCAC
Tournament match in over 10 years.
In the quarterfinals, the Petrels ran into second-seeded
Colorado College and were dispatched 3-0 (25-17, 25-15, 25-11).
This dropped them into the loser's bracket, where they faced off
against sixth-seeded Centre, and were again dropped 3-0. The
Petrels put forth a valiant effort in the first game, losing 25-23.
However, after losing this game, the Petrels dropped the final two,
25-11 and 25-17.
This sent Oglethorpe to the seventh-place match against
eighth-seeded Rhodes. In this match, Oglethorpe won the first game
in impressive fashion, 25-14. However, they dropped the next three
to lose 3-1 and secure their eighth-place finish. Rhodes won the
final three games 25-20, 25-15 and 25-20 to win seventh place in
the tournament.
The tournament completed a 16-22 season record for the
Oglethorpe volleyball team. They finished 2-12 in SCAC play, but
had a 10-2 overall home record.
