Box Score The Oglethorpe University women's basketball team topped
Colorado College on Pinholster Court on Sunday afternoon, 83-80.
The Petrels snapped a five game losing streak in the process to get
back into the win column.
The Petrels took control of the contest in the first half by
holding the Tigers to 22.7% shooting from the field and Oglethorpe
was able to open up a 10 point lead and then head into the locker
room with an 8-point 37-29 advantage.
The Tigers stormed back on two separate occasions in the second
half to take a lead over Oglethorpe but head coach Ron Sattele's
squad showed fortitude by rallying each time to push the Tigers
away. Colorado College tied the game at 80 apiece with less than 40
seconds to play before fouling freshman Riley Cerone with 27 ticks
left. The freshman stepped to the line and calmly nailed two free
throws to give Oglethorpe a two point lead.
On the ensuing possession, Becky Leutjen launched a three that
would have given the Tigers the lead but the shot came off the back
iron, Cerone tracked down the rebound and was fouled. Cerone
connected for one of two at the stripe with 12 seconds remaining
and Leutjen's bid to tie the game with a three-ball in the waning
seconds went awry.
The Petrels enjoyed a dominating game by freshman Sarah Giles
who scored a team-high 17 points on 7 of 11 shooting
and grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds. Sarah Jones displayed her
multi-faceted game by pouring in 16 points, corraling 7 rebounds,
dishing 4 assists and forcing two steals in the win. Katie Weeks
also posted a double-double for the Petrels with 11 points and 11
rebounds on the afternoon.
With the result Oglethorpe is now 8-10 on the season and 3-6 in
SCAC play. The Petrels are back in action this Friday when they
face Hendrix College in Conway, Arkansas.
