Box Score The men's basketball team enjoyed a dominating victory over Sewanee on Saturday night, 96-50. The Petrels shot 65% from the field in the first half to open up a 51-28 lead that only expanded after intermission.
The Petrels opened up their first double-digit lead less than 6 minutes into the game and used a series of overpowering scoring spurts to continue to increase their lead. One stretch late in the first half typified the night for Oglethorpe when in only a matter of 55 seconds, the Petrels scored 11 points.
Leading comfortably at 40-25 following an Andrew Steioff stick back, Sewanee was forced to call a timeout. After the break in action, the Petrels forced a steal and subsequent Todd Ward hoop at the 2:17 mark. The Petrels then forced a Tigers miss on the other end and responded with a three-ball from Tyler Cerone. On the next possession the Tigers went 1 of 2 at the free throw line and Cerone found Sam Purdy open for another three on the other end. After another Sewanee miss, Cerone punctuated the game-breaking run with another three-point dagger, this time bringing the score to 51-26 with 1:22 remaining in the half.
The Petrels connected on 10 of 14 three-pointers in the first half with seven different players knocking in at least one. For the game Oglethorpe made 38 of 65 field goals (59%) and 14 of 26 three's (54%) in a contest in which all 13 players whom dressed recorded at least one basket.
Alex Richey knocked down 4 of 5 from long range and 6 of 8 overall a team-high 18 points to go along with 5 rebounds and 3 assists. Todd Ward added 11 points and 7 rebounds while Kennedy netted 8 points and a team-high 7 assists.
Oglethorpe outrebounded Sewanee 40-27 for the game and only turned the ball over 9 times compared to 18 for the Tigers.
The Petrels are now 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in SCAC play. They are back in action next Saturday against Berry on Pinholster Court at 7:00 p.m.
