Box Score The men's basketball team notched thier third consecutive win on Saturday night by topping Trinity University on Pinholster Court, 78-67. In a nip-and-tuck affair that included 12 second half lead changes, senior guard Joe Kennedy scored 10 of his game-high 29 points in the final five minutes to guide the Petrels to victory.
The Petrels ran out in front of the Tigers by the score of 20-8 in the first eight minutes of the game but Trinity responded with a 17-6 run to tighten things up at 26-25. The two teams headed into the locker room with Oglethorpe leading 34-31.
The second half featured two ties and 12 lead changes as the teams traded blows back and forth. Trinity managed to earn a three point 49-46 lead with 11:54 to play before a three-pointer from Branden Jovaag knotted the score at 49 apiece. After the lead changed hands two more times Oglethorpe finally forged ahead for good on a hoop by Todd Ward at the 8:25 mark.
The Petrels still only lead the Tigers by two points with 5:03 to play before Joe Kennedy began to punctuate an already outstanding night with back-to-back three-pointers that lifted Oglethorpe's lead to 69-62 with 4:14 to play. Kennedy added another difficult leaning 19-footer and two free throws down the stretch to help Oglethorpe close out the victory.
For the night Kennedy made a ridiculous 8 of 11 shots from behind the arc on his way to 29 points and 3 assists. Andrew Steioff added a great all-around game with 16 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocks while Todd Ward nearly matched him with 11 points, 13 rebounds, 6 assists and 2 blocks.
The Petrels outrebounded the taller Tigers 36-29 and dished 22 assists compared to only 12 turnovers on the night. All 8 of the Oglethorpe players that competed in the contest dished at least one assist in the huge conference win.
Oglethorpe is now 9-7 on the season and 5-2 in SCAC play. The Petrels are back in action this Friday at Colorado College.
