Box Score The men's basketball team topped Austin College on Sunday afternoon in Sherman, Texas, 87-62. The Petrels got off to a blistering start and, unlike Friday night, continued to pour it on in the second half to earn the big road conference victory.
Austin would score the first basket of the game to take a 2-0 lead but Oglethorpe quickly countered and that would wind up being the 'Roos only advantage of the game. The Petrels were 21 of 33 (64%) from the field in a first half that saw them open up a 44-24 cushion before settling for a 49-35 halftime lead.
The 'Roos cut the lead to 12 points early in the second half but would get no closer as Oglethorpe responded with the next 11 points to gain a 23 point advantage that was insurmountable. The Petrels took their largest lead of the contest on their final possession of the game as Sam Purdy knocked down a three-ball as the shot clock expired to provide the final score of 87-62.
The Petrels shot 51% from the field for the game and all five starters posted double-digits in the win. Every player that dressed for the game scored a basket or contributed a rebound in the dominating victory. Oglethorpe held a 38-33 advantage in rebounding and dished 18 assists on their 33 made field goal attempts.
Sophomore Alec Pitts was the offensive star for Oglethorpe, netting a game-high 21 points on 8 of 14 shooting. Pitts added 6 rebounds, 3 assists and 2 steals to his impressive overall performance. Joe Kennedy posted 14 points and 5 assists and Alex Richey tallied 14 points with 4 rebounds. Todd Ward and Andrew Steioff combined for great work in the post with Steioff netting 12 points and 7 boards while Ward notched 11 points, 6 rebounds and 4 assists.
Oglethorpe is now 10-8 (6-3) on the season and will host Millsaps College this Friday night at 8:00 p.m.
