Women Foiled Late Again, This Time at Sewanee

Box Score

The women's basketball team lost at Sewanee on Friday night 66-63. The Petrels raced out to an 11 point halftime lead and led the Tigers for most of the contest before a three-ball with 12 seconds remaining turned a 2-point Petrel advantage into a 1-point deficit and sealed Oglethorpe's fate.

Sewanee held a 10-8 advantage early on with 15:28 to play in the first before Oglethorpe got hot and went on a 15-1 spurt to open up a 23-11 lead with 10:48 left in the half. The run was ignited by Riley Cerone hitting one of her five 3-pointers on the night to push the Petrels in front. Mareva Bone and Sarah Giles followed with lay-ups on back-to-back trips before teammates found Cerone for two more three's to suddenly up the margin to 10. Katie Weeks capped the spurt with a driving bucket and it looked like the Petrels might claw out a road SCAC win.

Oglethorpe eventually pushed the lead to 14 points before settling on a 40-29 cushion at halftime. After shooting 44.4% from the field in the first half, including going 6-of-9 from downtown, the Petrels shooting touch betrayed them in the second stanza. Sewanee would score the first 11 points in the half to tie the game as Oglethorpe went on to miss 20 of their 29 second half field goal attempts.

Despite the cold shooting, Oglethorpe hung tough and, after a bucket from Bone with 24 ticks left, clung to a 63-61 lead. The Tigers Heather Baier responded with a deep three-pointer with only 12 seconds left to push Sewanee in front and spoil the Petrels chances for a road win. Ky'Laine Rogers had her shot to give Oglethorpe the win blocked with 7 seconds left and the Tigers knocked down two free throws to seal it.

Cerone connected on 5-of-10 treys to pace Oglethorpe with 15 points, 5 assists and four rebounds. Bone tallied 14 points and grabbed 9 boards while Sarah Jones and Katie Weeks rounded out the Petrels in double-figures with 12 and 10 points, respectively.

Oglethorpe is now 3-6 (0-2) on the season and will face Centre in Danville, Ky. this Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
