Colonels Lead Wire-to-Wire, Top Petrels

Box Score

The men's basketball team lost to Centre College in Danville, Kentucky on Sunday afternoon, 67-52. The Petrels trimmed a 10 point Colonel lead down to five with 5:02 remaining but did not make a field goal the rest of the game en route to the loss.

After Friday night's three-point barrage by DePauw the Petrels must have been feeling deja vu in the early stages as Centre connected on their first three 3-point attempts to jump out to a 9-2 advantage that was never relinquished. Oglethorpe would ultimately trim the lead down to three points in the first half before the Colonels headed into the locker room with a 6 point cushion. The Petrels cut the deficit to 5 on two separate occasions in the second half but would get no closer.

The Petrels struggled to score the basketball, making only 19 of 50 shots (38%) on the afternoon. The team particularly had difficulty with shots from long distance, converting just 6 of 20 (30%) from beyond the arc. The Colonels weren't much better (37% FG, 35% 3-point FG) but dominated the boards 40-28 and scored from the charity stripe (18 free throw makes to only 8 for Oglethorpe) to earn the win.

Joe Kennedy tallied 15 points to lead the Petrels. Todd Ward netted 11 points and grabbed 8 rebounds while Alex Richey posted 10 points and 5 boards in the loss.

The Petrels are now 13-11 on the season and 9-6 in SCAC play. The regular season concludes this Saturday when the team takes on Sewanee in Tennessee.
