Majors Tip Lady Petrels in Overtime

Box Score

The women's basketball team lost in overtime to Millsaps College on Pinholster Court on Sunday afternoon, 58-52. The Petrels held the lead for virtually all of regulation but the Majors were able to tie things and then scored the final 8 points of the overtime to steal the conference win.

The Petrels got off to a great start in this one, racing out to an 11-0 lead that was spearheaded by 7 Mareva Bone points. The Majors did not score until over 8 minutes into the contest, but when they did, the points came in a flurry. Millsaps tallied 12 points in just over three minutes to take a brief 12-11 lead. Katie Weeks responded with a jumper to put OU back in front and the Petrels would extend that lead to 24-16 at the half.

The Majors slowly chipped away at the Oglethorpe lead throughout the early stages of the second half and managed to tie it up at 31 apiece with 12:39 to play. The Petrels went on a 10-2 run, though, to push the margin back to 8 with 7:57 remaining. Millsaps responded with 10 straight points to suddenly take a 43-41 lead with 3:03 showing on the clock. Sarah Jones answered the call with a three-ball to give Oglethorpe the lead, Shante Morton countered with her own three for Millsaps a few possessions later to tie it again and the score read 48-48 after regulation. The Petrels did have a great chance to end the game on a Jones three-pointer at the buzzer but the shot was just wide.

Oglethorpe briefly forged ahead in the overtime period following a Katie Weeks jumper to make it 52-50 Oglethorpe. That would be the Petrels last hoop, however, as the Majors rattled off 8 straight to close out the game.

Playing shorthanded without either of their post players in Sarah Giles and Ky'Laine Rogers, the Petrels were outrebounded 55-38 on the afternoon. Oglethorpe held Millsaps to just 29% shooting (21-of-73) but could not overcome the size mismatch in the end.

The Lady Petrels are now 3-11 (0-5) on the season and will travel to Texas to face Trinity this Friday at 6:00 p.m.
