Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team fell to Millsaps, 3-1, in SAA play Sunday afternoon at Dorough Field House.
In the first set, the Petrels jumped out to a 9-3 lead in the earlygoing. However, the visiting Majors came back with four in a row to pull to within two, 10-8. Then, they turned the set upside down, embarking on a 12-4 run to take a 22-18 lead.
However, Oglethorpe responded with a huge run of their own, a 5-1 stretch, to tie the score, 23-23. With the Petrels poised to take the set back, though, Millsaps suddenly won two points in a row to take it for themselves, 25-23.
In the second set, Millsaps outscored Oglethorpe 10-4 after a 2-2 tie, taking a 12-6 lead. Oglethorpe would mount a huge rally, though, fashioning a 10-2 run of their own and overtaking Millsaps for the lead, 18-16.
However, no sooner had that happened then Millsaps pulled back ahead with another big run, 23-19. From there, the teams traded points, which benefited Millsaps, and they took the second set, 25-22.
In the third set, the Petrels took a 6-3 lead, then extended it to 13-8 midway through the set. Millsaps came back with five straight points to even the score up, 13-13, but Oglethorpe answered this time, going on a 6-1 run to take a 19-14 lead. Then, after Millsaps had started to come back again, the Petrels closed the set on a 4-1 run to win it, 25-20.
In the fourth set, the Petrels took a 4-2 lead, then extended it to 7-4. However, the Majors would going on runs of 5-0 and 4-0 to completely turn the set in their favor, 13-9. Oglethorpe would come back to briefly take the lead again, 14-13, but Millsaps recovered to take an 18-16 lead. Oglethorpe would come back to tie the score, 18-18, but would never again have the lead, as the Majors closed the set and the match out, 25-20.
Junior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko and sophomore outside hitter Erin Shelton both had good performances. Bondarenko finished with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Shelton had 12 and 11, respectively. Junior setter Anna Marie DiSalvo passed out 40 assists, while junior libero Megan Makuck recorded 16 digs and defensive specialist Kayley Earley 12.
The loss drops the Petrels to 5-16 on the year. They finish SAA play with an 0-14 record. They'll next face two non-conference opponents before heading to the SAA Tournament. They'll begin by facing Piedmont on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. in Dorough Field House.
