Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team suffered a 3-0 defeat to Millsaps in Jackson, Miss., Saturday. The loss drops the squad to 4-8 on the season, 0-6 in SAA play.
The first set was a tightly-contested, back-and-forth affair between the two sides. The home-standing Majors were ahead, 10-8, but from there, the Petrels went on a big run and took a 19-14 lead. However, the Majors fought back and went on a run of their own, retaking the lead and extending it to 24-22, setting up match point. The Petrels won two consecutive points to re-tie the proceedings, and the set remained tied, 25-25. Millsaps won the next two points, though, to take the set, 27-25.
In the second set, Millsaps started out by taking an 8-5 lead. The Petrels came back to even the score, 8-8, but from there, Millsaps took a 13-11 lead. The Petrels came back to tie it at 14-14, but the Majors again went on a run, this time five out of the next six points to take a 19-15 lead. The Petrels fought back and cut the Millsaps lead to two, 20-18, but Millsaps finished the set with five straight points to take the stanza, 25-18.
The Petrels hung around in the third set, as well. They tied the score, 4-4, after falling behind, 4-2, then fell behind again, 7-4. They came back to tie the set again, 7-7, but that gave way to four straight points from Millsaps and an 11-7 deficit. The Petrels again came back to pull to within two, 12-10, but Millsaps again pushed the lead back out to four, 16-12. The Petrels mounted one final push, winning five of the next seven points to pull to within a single point, 18-17. However, Millsaps embarked on another four-point run to push the lead out to 22-17. The Petrels got back to within three, 23-20, but Millsaps won the final two points to win the set, 25-20, and take the match.
Junior setter Anna Marie DiSalvo came back from an ankle injury to lead the team in assists with 27 in this match. She also recorded 10 digs. Junior libero Megan Makuck tallied 29 digs, while junior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko came up with a team-high 14 kills.
The Petrels will take the court again Sunday, taking on Birmingham-Southern at 2 p.m. Eastern in Birmingham, Ala.
