Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team saw its season come to an end Saturday morning with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-16, 25-18) loss to Birmingham-Southern in the consolation round of the SAA Championship in Mount Berry, Ga.
In the first set, the Petrels ran out to a 6-4 lead to start the proceedings, and then ran off four straight points after a brief Birmingham-Southern comeback to take a 12-10 lead. However, the Panthers went on a 5-1 run to take a 16-13 lead. Then, they extended their advantage to 23-18. The Petrels came back to within 23-20, but the Panthers closed out the set for the 25-21 victory.
In the second, Birmingham-Southern immediately ran out to a 6-2 lead. The Petrels came back to within one, 7-6, but the Panthers again pulled the lead back out, attaining an 18-11 advantage. They closed the set out with three straight points for a 25-16 victory.
In the third set, the Stormy Petrels again fell behind, this time 6-1. Oglethorpe brought it back to a 7-5 scoreline, then went on a 4-1 run to pull to within one, 10-9. However, a 5-1 BSC took their lead back out to 15-10. A run of four straight points brought the Petrels right back to within a point, 15-14. But from there, Birmingham-Southern finished the set on a 10-4 run. They put the set and the match away, 25-18.
Junior setter Anna Marie DiSalvo recorded 15 assists during the match, while junior libero Megan Makuck came up with 15 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Erin Shelton added 10 digs of her own.
The Petrels finish the season with a 5-20 record. They will return virtually the entire team next year, as there were no seniors on this year's squad.
