Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team went down to defeat, 3-1 to Centre, Sunday morning at Dorough Field House. The Petrels begin their SAA campaign 0-2 after Saturday's 3-2 loss to Sewanee.
The Stormy Petrels got off to a rough start in this one, dropping the first two sets and making a comeback very difficult. In the first set, Centre went on a 13-4 run after the score was tied 4-4. The Colonels had a 17-8 lead. Oglethorpe went on a run of five straight points to cut the lead to 17-13. Then after Centre pushed it back out to 22-14, the Petrels went on another big run, cutting the Centre lead to 23-20. However, the Colonels finally held the Petrels for a 25-22 victory in the first set.
In the second set, the Colonels completely dominated the proceedings. They ran out to a 21-11 lead before cruising home for a 25-15 second-set win.
The Petrels responded in the third set. They ran out to a 10-6 lead, and later expanded it to 21-13. Centre mounted a bit of a comeback, but the Petrels put the set away, 25-21.
In the fourth set, the Colonels went ahead 11-6, needing only to win one more set to take the match. The Petrels mounted a big rally, though. They went on a 10-5 run to turn the set into their favor, 16-14. The Petrels led 22-21 late in the set, but from there, Centre reasserted control and won it, 25-23.
McKenna Bondarenko led the team with 14 kills on the morning, while Erin Shelton slammed home 13. Anna Marie DiSalvo had another good match as the team's setter, passing out 31 assists. Megan Makuck continued her work as libero with 31 digs, leading the squad on the day. Shelton added 16 of her own.
The Petrels are now 3-4 on the season, 0-2 in SAA play. They travel to Mount Berry, Ga., to take on Berry in their SAA road opener Tuesday at 7 p.m., then will travel across town to take on Agnes Scott at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
