Volleyball Defeats Agnes Scott, 3-1

The Oglethorpe volleyball team bounced back from its three-match losing streak Wednesday night, defeating Agnes Scott 3-1 across town in Decatur, Ga.

After falling behind 2-0 in the first set, the Petrels came back to tie it, 4-4. Agnes Scott went on a three-point mini-run to go up 7-4, then traded points with Oglethorpe to go up 9-6. The Petrels came back to tie the score, 10-10, but then saw Agnes Scott win five straight points to take a 15-10 lead. 

From there, though, Oglethorpe went on a 10-3 run to turn the set on its head and take a 20-18 lead. Agnes Scott rallied to tie it, 20-20, but from there, the Petrels closed out the set with a 5-3 run and take the all-important first set, 25-23.

In the second set, Agnes Scott started out with another early lead, 6-3. The Petrels came back to take a 9-8 lead, and the two teams continued to trade points until the Petrels led 16-15. From there, though, Oglethorpe went on a 7-0 run to take complete control of the set, 23-15. Despite a 4-0 answer by Agnes Scott, Oglethorpe completed the 25-19 second-set victory to take a 2-0 lead.

Agnes Scott answered back in the third set. They took a 10-6 lead only to see Oglethorpe come back to tie it, 15-15. However, Agnes Scott pulled away from there and won the set, 25-21.

In the fourth set, Agnes Scott went ahead 8-4, but the Petrels fought back to take a 13-10 lead. The two teams traded points until Agnes Scott pulled to within one, 18-17. From there, the Petrels went on a 4-0 run that more or less put the match away. Up 22-17, the Petrels cruised to a 25-19 victory and secured the 3-1 win in the match.

Junior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko led the team in kills with 19 of them, while sophomore outside hitter Erin Shelton recorded 10. Junior setter Anna Marie DiSalvo tallied another 41 assists, while junior libero Megan Makuck came up with 26 digs to lead the squad.

The Petrels improve to 4-5 on the season. They will travel to Memphis, Tenn., and Conway, Ark., this weekend to take on Rhodes and Hendrix in SAA play. They'll battle Rhodes at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday and Hendrix at the same time on Sunday.
