Volleyball Splits Doubleheader for Second Straight Weekend

The Oglethorpe volleyball team split a Saturday doubleheader for the second weekend in a row today, falling 3-2 to home-standing Piedmont and defeating Brewton Parker, 3-0.

The Stormy Petrels dominated Brewton Parker in the second match of the afternoon, as they swept the match in straight sets and prevented Brewton Parker from reaching 20 points in any of the three sets.

The Petrels pulled away for a 25-17 victory in the first set, then completely dominated Brewton Parker in the second, routing them, 25-10. In the third set, the Petrels swept to a 25-18 victory.

The Petrels were able to spread the setting duties around between Anna Marie DiSalvo and Kayley Earley in this one, as both players garnered 10 assists. McKenna Bondarenko led the squad with seven kills, while Erin Shelton pulled a team-high 10 digs.

In the first match, the Petrels blew a two-set lead to the host team for the second time in as many weeks and went on to lose to Piedmont, 3-2. Oglethorpe won the first two sets, 25-20, putting them just one set away from taking a big road win.

However, the Petrels lost the third set, 25-16, then fell 25-22 in a barnburner of a second set. Piedmont pulled away to win the fifth and final set, 15-7.

The Petrels played very well in the first two sets, sporting attack percentages of .179 and .250, respectively. However, they fell off in the final three sets, posting a negative percentage of -.023 in the third, followed by .132 and .000 in the final two sets, respectively.

Bondarenko led the squad with 19 kills in the match, while Shelton tallied 12 of them. Meanwhile, DiSalvo racked up an amazing 41 assists and libero Megan Makuck led the team with 23 digs.

The day's results move the Stormy Petrels to 2-2 on the season with neutral victories over Wesleyan and Brewton Parker to go with road losses to Covenant and Piedmont. They will now take a week off from game action before making a visit to LaGrange next Thursday at 7 p.m.
