The Oglethorpe volleyball team lost the final match on its SAA schedule Sunday afternoon, falling to Millsaps in straight sets in Jackson, Miss., 3-0. The home-standing Majors took the match 25-17, 25-17, 25-17.

The Stormy Petrels had difficulty getting things going offensively, as no one reached double-digit kills on the squad. Freshman setter Brooke Davis chipped in 15 assists, however, while senior outside hitter Anna Marie DiSalvo chipped in 14 kills, senior libero Megan Makuck contributed 13 and Davis tallied 10. 

After taking an early 2-0 lead, the Petrels saw the Majors go on a series of runs to take control of the set. They first went up 10-6 with a 10-4 run, then they ran off a pair of runs, taking leads of 14-8 and 20-11. The Petrels came back with a run of their own, outscoring Millsaps 5-1 over a brief period, to cut the lead to 21-16. However, Millsaps closed it out from there, finishing on a 4-1 run to take the set.

In the second, the Petrels again opened with the lead, jumping out to a 6-3 advantage. However, another early Millsaps run turned the advantage around again. They embarked on a 10-2 spurt to take a 14-9 lead. Oglethorpe again had an answer, pushing back to within a point, 15-14, after a five-point run of their own. They were still within one, 18-17, but Millsaps did not allow another point the rest of the set. They ran off seven straight to take a 2-0 lead.

In what turned out to be the final set, Millsaps put the Petrels behind the eight-ball early on. They went ahead 22-8 before the Petrels began a big comeback to give themselves a chance in the set. Down 24-10, the Petrels staved off seven match points to get back to within seven, 24-17. However, Millsaps was eventually able to nail down the point which won the match.

The loss drops the Petrels to 15-16 on the season. They finish 3-11 in SAA play, a record which puts them seventh in the league. They'll take the rest of the week off from matches before getting back to action next week. They'll travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga., next Tuesday to take on Covenant in their final regular-season match. Then, they'll go to Conway, Ark., that weekend to compete in the SAA Tournament. The Petrels' tournament will get started next Friday against these same Millsaps Majors, the second seed in the field.
