Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team picked up its second win of the SAA season Saturday, blanking hosts Rhodes in Memphis, Tenn., 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-21).
After Friday's 1-1 trip to Conway, Ark., which featured a conference loss to Hendrix, the Stormy Petrels recovered well and took it to the homestanding Lynx on Saturday afternoon. Senior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko led the team with 12 kills, hitting .346 in the process. Fellow senior outside hitter Anna Marie DiSalvo added 10 kills of her own, while senior libero Megan Makuck 13 kills. Freshman setter Katie Stewart collected 23 assists and 14 digs of her own.
In the first set, the Lynx started off well, building an early 10-7 lead. Oglethorpe ran off five in a row to take a 12-10 lead, but a big Rhodes run gave them the lead back, 17-15. However, from there the Stormy Petrels took complete control of the set. They ran off nine points in a row and 10 of the final 11, turning the set on its head and winning it, 25-18.
In the second set, Rhodes jumped out to another early lead, building a 7-4 advantage. The Petrels ran off four straight points to take a 12-11 lead, which was followed by the two teams trading points for a period. With the score tied, 14-14, the Petrels embarked on a run that would put them in charge of the set, going on a 9-2 spurt to take a 23-16 lead. Rhodes was able to fight back to within four, 24-20, but the Petrels put the set away from there, 25-20.
Oglethorpe held the lead the whole way in the third set. They built their lead to 8-4 early, then extended it to 18-11 midway through the set. Rhodes came back with a run to cut the lead back to three, 19-16. The Petrels were able to get a match point, building a 24-19 lead. Rhodes was able to fend it off twice, cutting the lead to 24-21, but the Petrels put it away from there, winning the set, 25-21.
The win improves the Petrels to 13-10 on the year, including 2-5 in SAA play. They'll next take the floor on Wednesday, when they travel to Mount Berry, Ga., to battle Berry at 7 p.m.
