Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team had a competitive match against Berry Wednesday night in Mount Berry, Ga., but lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 25-16), unable to take a set off the home-standing Vikings.
The Stormy Petrels got a team-high eight kills from senior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko, 20 assists from freshman setter Katie Stewart, and 11 digs from senior libero Megan Makuck in the process.
The match started out okay for the Petrels. The Vikings took an early 6-3 lead right off the bat but the Petrels fought back with a 6-1 run, taking a 10-8 lead. The two teams traded points for awhile and the Petrels still had a two-point lead, 20-18, later on in the set. However, Berry went on a big run from that point, outscoring the visitors 7-1 over the remainder of the set, taking it 25-21.
In the second set, the two teams went back and forth for awhile, but Berry built a slim two-point lead, 11-9. However, a giant Petrel run put them in a position to win the set. Oglethorpe outscored Berry 9-3 over the next 12 points and took an 18-14 lead. They still led 20-16 when Berry started on the spurt that would turn the set back in their favor. The Vikings ran off the next seven points to turn the set upside-down and take a 23-20 lead. Berry went on to take a 24-21 lead and, though the Petrels fought off set point once, they couldn't a second time. Berry won the set, 25-22.
In the third, the Petrels were able to obtain an early 5-4 lead, but were never able to get the advantage back. Berry proceeded to go on a 6-1 run to take a 10-6 lead. After Oglethorpe came back to tie it, 13-13, the Vikings ran off eight in a row to essentially put the set away and take a 21-13 lead. Berry went on to take the set, 25-16.
The Petrels fall to 13-11 on the season, 2-6 in SAA play. They'll next take the court this weekend, when they go back on the road in SAA play. They'll take on Centre in Danville, Ky., at 1 p.m. Saturday before moving on to Sewanee, Tenn., to go against Sewanee at 2 p.m. Eastern on Sunday.
