Box Score The Oglethorpe women's volleyball team got its season off to an excellent start Friday afternoon in the first official event of the 2014-15 Oglethorpe Athletics season as they swept in-state opponent Wesleyan (Ga.), 3-0, in their opening match at the Huntingdon College Jubilee in Montgomery, Ala.
The Stormy Petrels blitzed the Wolves 25-9, 25-13, 25-18 in a match that lasted just an hour. They got 11 kills from senior outside hitter McKenna Bondarenko and 10 kills from senior outside hitter Anna Marie DiSalvo, now back in her natural position after acting as the team's setter for the majority of the last two seasons. DiSalvo successfully killed 10 of her 16 total attacks without committing an error, good enough for a .625 hitting percentage on the match. Meanwhile, freshman Katie Stewart, the team's new setter, performed admirably at the postition, passing out 32 assists. For her part, senior libero Megan Makuck collected 17 digs. Meanwhile, freshman defensive specialist Gianna Zitello racked up 15 digs herself.
The Petrels got out to a 7-1 lead right off the bat, taking control of the first set very early. After a brief Wesleyan run pulled the score back to 7-4, the Petrels made it 9-4 before embarking on a run of 13 straight points to take a 22-5 lead and all but put the set away. The Petrels cruised to the easy 25-9 victory after that.
In the second set, Oglethorpe actually fell behind 3-2 early. However, they went on a 13-4 run from there to take control of the set, 15-7. After the Wolves cut it back to within five, the Petrels closed out the set with a 10-3 run, taking it 25-13.
That meant the Petrels only needed to win one of the potential final three sets to take the match. They didn't waste any time putting it away, however. After Wesleyan jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the third, the Petrels came storming back to a 7-5 advantage. Another run by the Wolves put them ahead by two, 10-8, but the Petrels finished 11 straight points to pull ahead, 19-10. Wesleyan had one final flourish, pulling back to within just four, 22-18, but the Petrels closed out the match from there, winning the final three points to take the set, 25-18, and the match, 3-0.
Oglethorpe will be back in action on Saturday at the Huntingdon College Jubilee. They'll take on Talladega at 1 p.m. Eastern before turning around and immediately playing hosts Huntingdon at 3 p.m. Eastern.
