Volleyball Drops SAA Finale to Millsaps, 3-0

Box Score

The Oglethorpe volleyball team rounded out their SAA slate on Sunday afternoon, welcoming Millsaps to the Schmidt Center. The Majors exited with a 3-0 victory, winning 25-17, 25-19, 25-20. As a result, the Stormy Petrels fall to 5-23 and 0-14 in SAA play.

Millsaps got off to a fast start in the first set, pushing to a 6-3 advantage. The Petrels quickly fought back and tied the score, however, using a couple of small point runs to make it 10-10. From there, though, the Majors took control of the set with an 11-3 run, taking a 23-15 lead. From there, the visitors cruised to a 25-17 victory in the first set.

The second set began as a tight, back-and-forth affair. The two teams traded points for much of the set with neither gaining more than a two-point edge during the first half of the stanza. With Millsaps up 13-12, the Petrels ran off three consecutive points to take a 15-13 lead. However, the Majors started their run at that point. They embarked on a 10-2 stretch to all but put the set away, taking the lead away and extending it to 23-17. From there, they put the set away 25-19 to take a 2-0 lead.

The third set was competitive throughout. The Petrels built a 6-3 lead before Millsaps came back with five of the next six points to take an 8-7 lead. The Petrels came back to briefly retake a one-point lead, but a 5-1 Major run put them back ahead, 14-11. The Petrels ran off three straight to tie it 14-14 and the two teams traded points for a brief period. Millsaps had a 19-18 lead, but four straight points from the Majors pushed them well into the lead 23-18, and they went on to close the set 25-20.

Freshman outside hitter Santreece Stephens once again finished with double-digit kills, recording 10 over the course of the match. Fellow freshman setter Hannah Masiongale passed out 24 assists while freshman libero Savannah Grove led the team with nine digs.

"We needed to have a better attack in all three sets today in order to score points against a very good defensive Millsaps team," said Head Coach Richie Tang. "Santreece led our team in kills once again, but we need our other hitters to pick up the slack. We also had several service errors that resulted in a handful of point runs for our opponent, and that was essentially the difference in the match. What doesn't show up in the box score is the great effort and energy on the court by Alette Duan. The closer scores in the second and third sets can be directly attributed to her effort."

The SAA regular season is now over for the Petrels, but they'll play three more matches before traveling to Conway, Arkansas, for the SAA Tournament in two-weeks' time. They'll take on Wesleyan in Macon, Georgia, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday before hosting the final tri-match of the regular season Saturday, welcoming in both Fisk and Piedmont.
