Volleyball Drops SAA Match at Sewanee

Box Score

The Oglethorpe volleyball team's tough road trip continued Saturday when they traveled to Southeast Tennessee to take on Sewanee in an SAA contest. The Stormy Petrels fell 3-0 to the homestanding Tigers and dropped to 2-10 on the season, 0-4 in SAA play.

The opening set began in back-and-forth fashion, as the Petrels and Tigers traded mini-runs to make the score 9-9. The Petrels were behind 9-5 a moment before, but finished four consecutive points to even the score. After Sewanee pushed back out to a three-point lead, Oglethorpe again went on a spurt, a 6-2 run that vaulted them into a 15-14 lead. However, they would score just twice more the remainder of the set. The Tigers finished the stanza on an 11-2 stretch and took a 1-0 lead with a 25-17 first-set victory.

The Petrels again had an early advantage in the second, as they jumped out to a 3-2 edge. After back-to-back Sewanee points, the visitors answered with back-to-back points of their own to make the score 5-4. It was the last lead Oglethorpe would enjoy in the set, however. The two teams traded points for awhile and the Tigers clung to a 12-11 lead later in the set. At that point, though, they embarked on a 12-2 run that closed the set, giving them a 2-0 lead with a 25-12 second-set win.

Sewanee pushed out to a big lead early in the third set, holding an 8-2 edge on the Petrels. The visitors slowly clawed their way back into the set, however, pushing to within two and then beginning to trade points with their opponents. The Tigers led 16-12 later in the set, but the Petrels began a run of seven straight points that pushed them into a 19-16 lead. However, the Tigers responded by winning the final nine points of the set to take it, 25-19, and secure a 3-0 victory.

The Petrels did have some solid individual performances on the morning. Freshman outside hitter Santreece Stephens led the team with 11 kills, while freshman outside hitter MaryAnn Smith and sophomore middle hitter Kaitlyn Woodruff added six apiece. Freshman setter Hannah Masiongale passed out 23 assists, while freshman defensive specialist Savannah Grove led the squad with 13 digs. Fellow freshman defensive specialist Anna Rash added 10 digs of her own.

The Petrels will continue their SAA road trip Sunday when they venture up to Danville, Kentucky, to take on Centre. That match is scheduled to begin at noon. After that, Oglethorpe will return to the Atlanta area. They'll take on Agnes Scott and No. 4 Emory Wednesday at Agnes Scott's campus in Decatur before returning to Dorough Field House for their SAA home openers against Rhodes and Hendrix.
