Volleyball Falls at Millsaps in Straight Sets

Box Score

The Oglethorpe volleyball team found themselves in a tough matchup with the Millsaps Majors Saturday afternoon in Jackson, Mississippi, and just couldn't get untracked in a 3-0 loss. The Stormy Petrels fell 25-17, 25-18, 25-18, and dropped to 7-8  on the season overall and 1-5 in SAA play.

Oglethorpe fell behind the 8-ball early in the first set and wound up falling 25-17 in that frame. They played a little bit better in the second set, but a large Millsaps point run propelled them to a 25-18 victory in that stanza. It was much the same in the third set, with the Petrels falling 25-18 to close out the 3-0 victory for Millsaps.

The Petrels got 10 kills from sophomore outside hitter Santreece Stephens to lead the team while junior setter Jordan Jones passed out 19 assists. Sophomore libero Anna Rash continued her streak of matches with at least 20 digs, as she posted 22 on the afternoon.

"I thought we prepared well for Millsaps," said Oglethorpe head coach Richie Tang. "However, preparation and execution are two different things.  We ran into a really dangerous team in Millsaps who dictated what they wanted in this match.  We struggled with our passing.  We have to be better if we're going to compete in this conference.  Every match is tough, but we have to be better at the small things.  We allowed Millsaps point runs that we couldn't match and played catch up a lot and that's not the way to win matches in our league. We'll have a chance to come back tomorrow afternoon against Birmingham-Southern. They're a tough team also, but we have a chance if we play the way we're capable of."

The Petrels will continue to Birmingham, Alabama, to take on Birmingham-Southern Sunday at 2 p.m. Eastern. After that, they'll continue with road matches at Berry 7 p.m. Wednesday and at Centre and Sewanee next weekend.
