Women's Basketball Routs Wesleyan, 92-29, in Home Opener

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team got its home season off to an excellent start Tuesday evening at Dorough Field House, jumping all over Wesleyan (Georgia) for a 92-29 victory that improved them to 2-2 on the young season. The Stormy Petrels outshot the visiting Wolves 45-to-19 percent, including 38-to-13 percent from long distance, and outrebounded them 64-32, including 26-11 on the offensive glass. They also collected 27 assists to Wesleyan's five and outscored them 32-6 in the paint and 68-21 off the bench.

The Petrels saw a pair of bench players earn double-doubles on the night and four of them finish in double figures in points. Sophomore forward Emily Toomer finished with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-16 shooting and grabbed a career-best 12 rebounds while fellow sophomore forward Alice Sacal collected 10 points on 4 of 8 from the field and grabbed 10 boards of her own. Junior guard Rebecca Spry tallied 17 points of her own on 6 of 7 from the field and 5 of 6 from 3-point range. She added 7 rebounds and a career-high 6 assists. Sophomore center Alexandria Brown collected 11 points and came just a rebound short of tallying a double-double. Eight of her 9 rebounds were corralled on the offensive glass.

The Petrels jumped all over the Wolves early, starting the contest on a 29-6 run over the opening eight minutes of play. Back-to-back Wesleyan baskets to end the period cut the Oglethorpe lead to 29-11, but Oglethorpe picked up right where they left off going into the second quarter. They outscored Wesleyan 24-7 over the course of the second period and took a 53-18 lead into the locker room.

Oglethorpe continued their run in the second half, starting it on a 13-1 run over the first six minutes to extend their halftime-bridging run to 37-8 over a 16-minute stretch. The Petrels continued to push the lead out with their bench players, outscoring the Wolves 26-7 over the final 13 minutes of the game, including 20-5 in the fourth quarter.

"We got a lot of good minutes and experience throughout our young lineup tonight, which is important for us moving forward," said Oglethorpe head coach Alex Richey. "I thought our unselfish play and ball movement were outstanding. Back-to-back wins is a good way to go into the holiday. I'm proud of our group and thankful for them and their families as we roll into our two-day Thanksgiving break."

The Petrels travel to Demorest, Georgia, over the weekend for the USA South/SAA Classic. They'll take on home team Piedmont at 4 p.m. Saturday before going against LaGrange in a neutral-site game at 2 p.m. Sunday.
