Box Score The Oglethorpe volleyball team finished a tough road trip on Sunday afternoon, falling to the homestanding Millsaps Majors in Jackson, Mississippi, 3-0. The result dropped the Stormy Petrels to 2-5 on the young season, 0-3 in SAA play. The visitors got behind the eight-ball early with a 25-7 defeat in the first set. They played better in the next two, but lost 25-19 and 25-17, respectively.
The Petrels got some good individual performances, with freshman outside hitter Jacoby Sims leading the team with six kills. Freshman outside hitter Nya' Ross also played well, recording four kills on 10 total attempts without committing an error. Senior setter Jordan Jones led the team with 12 assists on the afternoon, while sophomore libero Taryn North recorded a match-high 19 digs. Junior middle hitter Ashlee Tolbert led all participants with four total blocks, three of them solo.
Oglethorpe was never in the first set. They fell behind 7-0 early, then traded points with the Majors for awhile, but found themselves behind 17-7. From that point, Millsaps ran off eight straight to finish off the stanza, 25-7.
The Petrels found a better footing in the second. They started with four straight winners to edge out to a 5-1 lead, then continued with a 6-1 mini-run to give themselves an 11-6 advantage in the early-going. Millsaps responded with a 10-1 run, though, turning the tables and giving themselves a 17-11 lead. The Petrels came back from there to tie the set at 17-17, but it was the Majors who played better down the stretch, and they reeled off an 7-1 run to all but put the set away, giving themselves a 24-17 advantage. They went on to win 25-19.
The third and final set featured runs by both teams. Millsaps started the stanza on a 6-1 run, but Oglethorpe responded with five straight points of their own to tie it. Another five-point run by the home side put them up 12-7, but a 6-3 Oglethorpe stretch brought them back to within a couple points, 15-13. After the two teams traded points for awhile, the score was 18-16. Millsaps ended the set on a 7-1 run to finish off the match with a 25-17 third-set win.
"This has been a tough road trip for us," said Oglethorpe head coach Joseph Goodson. "We had some chances to get back into the match today, but every time we got close, Millsaps went on a run. We're looking forward to getting back home for three straight conference matches next week."
The Petrels will welcome Rhodes to Dorough Field House for their SAA home opener Saturday at noon. After that, they'll face off against Hendrix at the same venue Sunday at noon before taking on in-state opponent Berry Wednesday at 6 p.m.
