Women's basketball knocks off Hendrix to start conference play in earnest

Box Score

The Oglethorpe women's basketball team made quick work of the Hendrix Warriors Friday evening, running away from them 80-52 at Dorough Field House to start 2020 on a positive note and improve to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in SAA play. The victory extended the Stormy Petrels' best start since 2008-09, when they began 16-1.

The Petrels shot the ball relatively well, converting at a 41.7 percent clip from the field. Meanwhile, they held Hendrix to just 25.9 percent shooting. Oglethorpe held a huge rebounding advantage, beating their opponent 56-30 on the glass. That turned into a 24-8 edge in second-chance points. The home side forced 21 Hendrix turnovers and outscored the Warriors 29-9 off of those takeaways. The Petrels also outscored their opponent by a whopping 44-6 margin in the paint.

Junior center Savannah LeGate led the way with another double-double, her sixth of the season. She recorded 15 points on 4-of-8 from the field to go with 10 rebounds. Junior guard Taylor Smith added 15 points on 7-of-12 from the field and eight rebounds, while sophomore guard Nikki Reed contributed 15 points of her own with four steals.

Hendrix led 3-0 at the outset, but that turned out to be their only lead of the contest. The Petrels embarked on a 25-7 run over the remainder of the first quarter. The Warriors played them evenly in the second quarter -- Oglethorpe outscored them 17-16 for the period -- but the home side still led 42-26 at the halftime break.

Oglethorpe really opened things up in the third quarter, beginning the period on a 14-3 run over the opening 5 minutes and taking a 56-29 lead. The Petrels extended their lead out from there, reaching their high-water mark in terms of margin when they took a 79-42 lead with just under 3:20 left in the fourth quarter.

The Petrels will be back in action from Dorough Field House on Sunday, when they welcome defending SAA champion Rhodes at 1 p.m. The Lynx enter the game at 2-0 in conference play, as well, having defeated Berry 70-62 on the road Friday evening.
