Volleyball falls at Birmingham Southern in three tight sets

Box Score

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.—The midseason woes continued Sunday for Oglethorpe's volleyball team as the Stormy Petrels came up short in all three sets to Birmingham Southern. Birmingham Southern won 25-21, 26-24, 28-26, marking another resilient effort for Oglethorpe that again came up short.

The Petrels, who entered the day having lost each of the last three matches in five sets, again fought hard to the bitter end, forcing extra play in the second and third set. They trailed 23-17 in the middle set before a 5-0 run helped them battle back, but Birmingham Southern would take the last two points to gain a 2-0 lead.

It was a similar finish to the final set, as Oglethorpe used a 4-0 run near the end to surge into a late lead. Birmingham Southern battled back to earn two match points that the Petrels thwarted before earning one of their own, but the Panthers won the last three points to take the match.

Jackie Schner had another impressive effort with 17 kills, seven digs, seven assisted blocks and one solo block. Emma Williams followed in the kill column with seven kills and 10 digs. Gabbi Phillips tallied 29 assists.

As a team, Oglethorpe posted 26 block assists, led by Ta'Korya Green with nine.

Oglethorpe hits the road again next weekend for matches at Hendrix and Rhodes to conclude its current five-match road swing. After that, the Petrels will return home for the final three matches of the regular season.
